Case Study

Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust

ACES were awarded Principal Contractor status for this £750k project covering the following services:

HV cabling, HV switchgear and LV transformer

Ancillary power supply

LV cabling, LV switchgear and mains distribution

Power and data containment

Lighting and emergency lighting

External lighting

Fire Alarm system

Intruder, CCTV

The project involved the removal of two existing 11Kv sub-stations and the construction of a new combined 11kv sub providing HV and LV supply.

All works were carried out according to time and cost budget within a very sensitive critical supply environment along with the challenges of managing a multi-disciplined project in a very busy and confined site area.

As the Hospital unit remained active throughout the programme, continuity of the power supply was absolutely critical. ACES had to provide a full safety case, including risk assessments and contingency plans. Circuits were systematically switched across from one ring main to another as the renewal progressed. Ground works, excavations and structures to house the transformers and switches were also particularly challenging because of the steep terrain and poor accessibility for plant and materials.
